With the idea of \u200b\u200bturning the campus into a space for environmental care, college Eafit, in Medellín, opened this week the first "green building" in Colombia, which collects and reuses rainwater and plant has a façade.
The building which now operate the School of Engineering is also a natural air flow to optimize air conditioning, power stations and low power consumption.
The building of 8,200 square meters was planned for three years by Colombian architect Juan Fernando Forero. Its main attraction is a plant wall without windows or walls, which comprises two sides and helps maintain the indoor climate.
This facade plant, 115 meters long and 15 meters high was developed by landscape Jorge Mesa and Carlos Uribe.
"The building is part of the concept of 'University Park' we want to accomplish. In our master plan we undertook to bind the future of the university to care for the environment," he told AFP rector Juan Luis Mejia.
"We have to convert the campus into a scenario in which we live with our tropical flora. Therefore, we have planted some 16,000 orchids in three years to restore the vegetation, which in turn attracts native wildlife," said Mejía.
Total investment in the building was 13,500 million pesos (about $ 7.5 million) with funding from the Ministry of Education and the State Land Development Finance for almost half the amount.
In total, 45 school teachers participated in the conceptualization of structural calculations and deposits, as well as design and pre-design of each of the five-story building, according to Dean of Engineering, Alberto Rodríguez.
"This is not a building that houses a school, but a school who thought their building," Rodriguez said proudly.
Eafit University (formerly School of Administration, Finance and Technology Institute) is 50, and has several years construction 1960 and 1970. But still develops new buildings to be raised under the same ecological concept of the Faculty of Engineering, as the new headquarters of graduate programs, said the rector.
"We want the future of the university buildings have great respect for nature, because we teach in the classroom and educate on the same campus. In addition, students have a greater sensitivity to environmental protection, we must follow" said.
The Eafit, home to some 10,000 students and teaches 17 races, is located in the south of Medellin, Colombia's second largest city with 2.5 million inhabitants.

megabiodiversity: the world's most ecologically rich air
Biodiversity is not evenly distributed across the planet. A small group of countries, whose area accounts for 10% of the Earth's surface, home to 70% of all animal and plant species. Brazil, Colombia and China are some of the mega-diverse countries that have joined together to defend their rights and protect all their natural wealth of the growing threats.
The mega is a concept created by the environmental organization Conservation International (CI) to call attention to the focus areas of the globe greater biological wealth and provide the means to protect it. It is estimated that up to 70% of the planet's biodiversity and 45% of world population, which represents the greater cultural diversity, are in 17 countries, an area that occupies 10% the world's total.
Center monitoring of environmental conservation, an agency of the United Nations Programme for Environment (UNEP) has identified 17 mega-diverse countries. The American continent contains the largest number of diverse countries, seven in total (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela), followed by Asia, with five (China, Philippines, Indonesia, India and Malaysia), three in Africa (Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa) and two in Oceania (Australia and Papua New Guinea).
